Alonissos is part of the Sporades Islands in Greece. With a distinctive and rugged beauty, immersed in olive groves, pine forests, and orchids, as well as traditional quaint villages dotted across the island.

There are two main towns on the island. The first is Chora, (pronounced Hora) it is signposted as 'The Old Village'.  Chora is an idyllic hilltop town with stunning views that overlook the blue Aegean Sea and pine forest-covered hills.  Walking through the cobbled streets you will notice how time has truly stood still in this charming village, which is lined with traditional Greek tavernas, where a mixture of English, Germans, and Greeks enjoy the local delicacies. You will pass by little shops where locals sell unique handcrafted items as well as little supermarkets that sell fresh local produce, looking up you will see the whitewashed brick houses with colorful balconies decorated in flowers and plants.

The second town in Alonissos, Patitiri. This is the capital and main port of Alonissos. The relatively new town was expanded after the island was devastated by a large earthquake in 1965. Locals from other villages had come to Patitiri, as their villages had been destroyed. Patitiri is a hillside town with a beautiful sandy beach. The harbor is always busy, with local fishermen, and people sailing through. Along the beach, there are tavernas, which are a fantastic place to relax and enjoy the local seafood and watch the sunset in the evenings whilst listening to the waves crash along the shoreline and the chatter of the locals. The town is full of bakeries, markets, tavernas, and cafes. With the natural environment being preserved, without affecting tourism, this capital has a peaceful and serene atmosphere with unique surroundings.

Getting to Alonissos is a little on the tricky side, however, it is truly worthwhile once you get there. You can reach the island by flying into Skiathos, Volos, or Athens, then a ferry or cameraman from the main ports to Patitiri port. Depending on the type of boat and where you are traveling from it can take anywhere from 5 hours to just over 1 hour. Skiathos will be the quickest route to Alonissos. From Athens will be the longest, as you will need to travel from Athens to the port of Agios Konstantinos, and then from there to Alonissos.

Alonissos and the Northern Sporades are famous for their National Marine Park.  It is one of the largest in Europe, not bad for a small collective of islands. It is the nature reserve of a number of terrestrial and marine species living in the Mediterranean Sea, including hundreds of plants and animals which include seals, as well as remarkable archaeological and historical monuments.

With both scientific and cultural interest, this area has a large number of archaeological finds dating well back to the prehistoric era, the classical period, and the Byzantine Empire. All visitors can swim, record, photograph, and enjoy the National park.
